Simple Meditation & Breathing Techniques

The Crystal Ball by John Waterhouse.

In this day and age it can be a real trial to stay grounded. Physically, we are surrounded with electromagnetic pollution, chemicals and wrong foods. Emotionally, we are on overload with our responsibilities, choices and thought patterns. And, spiritually, we can come into contact with too many negative 'vibes' through out the day that attach themselves to us and then we neglect to rid ourselves of them, which causes stress, anxiety and burn out. We need time out. We need to go somewhere and just breathe without distraction. This is especially true for Highly Sensitive Women.

How To Meditate

When meditating our minds should not be blank but focused on a mantra, a word, color, sound or syllable. It is not like praying. When we pray, we ask or thank. In meditation we focus and listen. The use of color in meditation enhances the opening of our chakras centers, developing and expanding them beyond previous limits. Go somewhere quiet where you will not be disturbed and get into a comfortable position.

Close your eyes and begin breathing slowly and deeply. As you breathe out, imagine you are expelling all of your tensions and worries. As you breathe in, you are taking in peace and love. The key in meditation is to concentrate on something positive, without being distracted, for a certain length of time. Don't worry if your mind keeps drifting to your shopping list or last night's events. This is normal.

Start with trying to 'focus' for five minutes and gradually build from there. If words don't suit you, try picturing a place in your mind you would like to be or go to. As you are meditating, be mindful of your five senses in this place you have created to relax in. Feel the sun on your face, smell the flowers, hear the waves roll up on the beach. he sand under your feet. Be there in every sense.

It may help you to imagine that your body is being covered from head to foot and saturated in a warm, loving bright light. Imagine that this light is filling any holes it might find as it seeps into your body and relaxes you. This light contains the healing energy of the universe. Let everything else drift away until you are ready to return.

Some people prefer to play soft meditation music in the background. The notes calmly belay the stages of their meditation and act as a reminder to wrap things up. When you are through with your meditation, sit for a moment or two and reorient yourself to your surroundings, your breathing and your five senses. Smile and give yourself a pat on the back.

The Use of Color In Meditation

You can also meditate with color by imagining each chakra being saturated with it's own particular color. As you focus on each chakra in your meditation, starting with the Root Chakra at the base of your spine, and moving up through the rest, visualize giving each chakra a boost of it's own color. Pay attention to how this feels. Does the energy of the color visit and pass through easily. Is the chakra filled enough already, hesitate to invite the color in, feel blocked in any way? Does it have more of a need than the others? What emotions do you sense? What messages?

For example, if you are feeling a bit more physically tired than usual, you might consider meditating on the Root Chakra. Its color is Red. it is located at the very bottom of your spine and determines how grounded we are. Color Meditation

Gold is a masculine energy and enhances your connection to God and your own personal strength. It strengthens your entire body, which is why many people 'Go for the Gold' when meditating for better health!

Imagine, if you would, a love so true that in it's presence you felt warm and safe all over from head to toe. Imagine you are a child of the most loving parents in the world, parents who never fail to let it be known how special you are and how much potential you have. Imagine that your parents are supportive to your eternal survival and hold special power to heal all of your wounds, dry all of your tears and erase away all pain and suffering and help your dreams come true. As you enter 'Gold', know that you are surrounded with this kind of power and love. Allow 'Gold' to go where there is a need to be healed and protected within your mind, your soul and your body. Gold is loving, masculine, protective and transforming. Bathe your chakras in it. Breathe it in, and out, until you are saturated. Take what you need. Gold is limitless. Gold is the color of universal and eternal loving power and peace. Stay as long as you like, as long as you are comfortable. When you leave 'Gold' today, know you are a step closer to the person you were created to be and rich in every way.

Doing Pretty Well at Visualizing? Take It To The Next Level!

Once you feel you can focus pretty well on visualizations, step it up a notch and clear your mind of everything. Try this for at least 5 minutes a day. This is true meditation. If this is too difficult, repeat one word over and over again (love, peace, calm, OHM, whatever...) while you breathe in and out easily.

A Simple Breathing Exercise

There are elaborate breathing exercises, but try this simple one on for size. For 5-10 minutes, sit or lay quietly and listen to your breath. Begin by inhaling through the nose for a normal count of 5, then exhale to a count of 5, making sure to empty your lungs of air (pull in your belly), and repeat. You're breathing right if your tummy expands on the inhale and flattens on the exhale. See if you can do this every day or whenever you need a stress reliever. It is natural relaxation response during the inhale that relaxes the body. If you feel light headed at all, don't breathe in quite so deeply until you get used to deep breathing over the next few days or weeks.
