The people living back in the old world had the right idea in establishing a set time for tea each day. Doing staved off hunger, provided the opportunity to indulge in therapeutic herbals, which toned and healed the body and encouraged relaxation. You can do the same.
Herbs and spices are natures medicines, which contain medicinal properties and work especially well, either, alone or in combinations to remedy fatigue, irritability, sadness and hypersensitivity. They (and the essential oils derived from them) can help you to prevent, manage and even erase symptoms and syndromes related to stress, plagues (bacterial, viral or fungal infections) and can be used for such ailments as coughs, colds, flu, nausea, rashes, cuts, scrapes and bites, pain and hormonal issues.
Herbs can be used in many different forms. They can be used in the form of poultices and compresses, electuaries, teas, oil infusions, tinctures and sprinkled on foods. They can also be added to modern day capsules and taken as supplements.
Basic Health Benefits of Common Herbs
Aloe Vera, when applied topically, can reduce the pain and itch of burns and rashes.
Ashwagandha ~ To support the immune system and reduce stress.
Baldo ~ Sedative
Barberry Root ~ Used to fight plague and malaria; an antihemorrhagic.
Basil ~ Proven to inhibit antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Betany ~ Heart palpitations
Bilberry ~ Aids circulation and supports healthy eyesight.
Butterbur ~ Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Sedative
Calendula (Marigold flower) - Use as a mouth wash for mouth infection and/or drink for sore throat.
Note: Do not use if you are allergic to Ragweed.
Cascara Sagrada ~ Constipation. Do not use in conjunction with Licorice Root.
Note: Do not use if you have a bowel disorder, use heart medication or corticosteroids.

Cat's Claw ~ Stimulates the immune system in an otherwise healthy body. It is an antioxidant, anti-viral, and cancer-fighting.
Note: Do not use if you have TB, HIV, MS or any other immune disorder. Do not combine with hormones, insulin, fresh blood plasma, or certain vaccines.
Celery Seed (or juice) ~ Anxiety, headache, sciatica and post herpetic neuralgia.
Chasteberry ~ Conditions of PMS, menopause, breast tenderness and other female conditions requiring hormone support and balancing.
Note: Do not use if you are using hormone replacements, are in your first trimester of pregnancy, or are on birth control pills. Occasionally, Chasteberry is used to increase progesterone to prevent miscarriage, but only when administered under doctor's care. Minor skin reactions have been reported.
Cinnamon - Stimulates the digestive process and helps to promote blood sugar balance.
Clary Sage ~ Hot flashes, Muscle/Nerve Tension, Sedative, Menopause, Fatigue
Clove ~ A pain reliever. Great for toothaches.
Cramp Bark ~ Antispasmodic, Sedative
Cranberry ~ May help with bladder symptoms. Otherwise, a refreshing tea.
Cilantro ~ Helps to remove lead from the body and prevents cancer.
Dandelion (Dent de Lion, Lion's Tooth, Cankerwort, Wild Endive) - Detoxifies the liver and blood, enhances digestion by increasing bile, a diuretic, relieves gas, bloating and constipation, gets rid of fungal warts, relieves acne, eczema and psoriasis, helps with appetite loss, rheumatism, gout, cancer and, possibly, viruses.
Note: Do not use if you have obstructed bile ducts.
Dang Gui (Chinese Angelica, Dong Quai, Tang Kuei) - PMS and cramps, pain, and a tonic for the liver and female glandular system.
Note: Do not use if pregnant or nursing, with anti-coagulant drugs, or if you have diarrhea. Dong Gui has a slight laxative affect.
Echinacea ~ Boosts the immune system against bacteria. Can help with eczema, PMS symptoms, and fatty acid deficiencies. Note: Taking for long periods of time can cause headache and stomach ache.
Fennel ~ Relief from gas, bloating, mild intestinal cramping, and coughing. As Fennel helps to balance hormone issues, it is beneficial for menopause issues. It is also an anti-microbial and contains anti-inflammatory properties.
Note: Do not use when pregnant. Has, rarely, caused skin and respiratory reactions.
Fenugreek ~ A mild laxative, helps with flatulence (but may cause gas in some individuals), restores appetite, balances blood sugar and cholesterol, stimulates the flow of breast milk.
Note: Fenugreek may interfere with diabetes medications. As it is high in mucilage the seeds may block absorption of drugs in the stomach lining.
Feverfew ~ Helps relieve migraine headaches, fever, and arthritis.
Note: Feverfew may interfere with anti-coagulants. Avoid if pregnant. Avoid chewing the leaves, as they can cause mouth irritations, swelling, and loss of taste.
Flaxseed ~ Relieves constipation. The seeds must be ground into powder and added to very warm water or into another tea beverage, such as Chamomile, Ginger or Peppermint, which are all good for calming the stomach.
Note: Do not use if you have severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome or a bowel obstruction. It may interfere with anti-coagulants.
DecafGreen Tea is great for helping to eliminate toxins from the body. Sencha has some caffeine, but not nearly as much caffeine as most caffeinated teas.
Gingko Biloba ~ Stimulates blood circulation. May relieve Tinnitus, reduce chances of getting Alzheimer's and prevent impotence. Rarely causes tummy upset, headache and skin reactions.
Note: Do not use if taking blood thinners. Gingko may interact with MAO inhibitors and interfere with anti-coagulants.
Ginger ~ Relieves nausea, indigestion, dizziness. May help to reduce cholesterol.
Note: It is probably safe to take before and after surgery, but do not use if you take anti-coagulants, have gallbladder disease or gallbladder obstruction. Ask your doctor before using Ginger if you are pregnant.
Ginseng ~ Stimulating, increases mental clarity and athletic performance, body tonic.
Note: Do not use if you have high blood pressure, have trouble sleeping, irregular heartbeat, asthma, a fever, or ingest products with caffeine or partake of other stimulants. May interfere with anti-coagulants. Do not use long term or stomach upset may be experienced. (See Siberian Ginseng below.)
Goldenseal ~ A natural antibiotic and cold remedy.
Note: May interfere with anti-coagulants. Do not use when pregnant.
Guto Kola ~ (Indian Pennywort, Tiger grass) - Improves memory and reduces stress, anxiety, panic attacks.
Hawthorn Berries - Healthy heart and veins. Relieves angina.
Note: Hawthorn Berries may interact with Digitalis.
Hibiscus ~ Packed full of antioxidants and minerals. Great for kids.
Hops ~ Anti-Depressant, Sedation, Menopause, Pain
Horehound ~ Low adrenal function, coughs and colds, stomach ulcers.
Note: Do not use if you have high blood pressure, liver or heart disease, or diabetes. May interact with diuretics or Digitalis. Do not use when pregnant. Discontinue after 6 weeks. Do not exceed recommended product dosage.
Horsetail ~ PMS. Horsetail is a diuretic and reduces heavy menstrual bleeding.
Hyssop ~ A powerful expectorant.
Kava ~ An anti-depressant, Pain
Lavender ~ Nervousness, Anxiety, Insomnia, Mild Burns, Skin Care
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) ~ Insomnia, Anxiety, Depression, Hysteria, Migraines, ADD, Viruses. Lemon balm contains antiviral properties. In a research study conducted in Germany, Lemon Balm promoted healing in half the time for cold sores. Lemon balm essential oil may also be diluted in carrier oil and applied directly to HSV-1 and HSV-2 sores and blisters. There seems to be some controversy over whether those with hypothyroidism should use Lemon Balm, because some say it affects TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. However, not all agree.
Oatstraw ~ Helps to calm the nervous system and regulate the digestive system. No known risks.
Oregano ~ Georgetown University research reveals oregano's antibiotic ability, due to its compounds, thymol and acrvacrol, which is like herbal penicillin. it is able to wipe out pathogens on contact, including staph, E. coli and salmonella.
Pau D' Arco ~ Helps to fight Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, viruses and bacteria, Cancer (including the prevention and remedy of prostate cancer).
Peyote (no longer legal in the USA) – Sedation
Peppermint ~ Refreshes, aids digestion, and combats first sign of colds and allergies, helps relieve intestinal spasms and mild headaches.
Note: Do not give Peppermint to infants. Be cautious when giving to children, as the active ingredient, Menthol, can make them choke. Do not eat or drink Peppermint if you have insufficient stomach acid, bile duct obstruction, or stomach inflammation.
Poppy ~ Sedation, Muscle Relaxant
Red Clover (Purple Clover, Cleaver Grass, Cow Grass, Trefoil) ~ Relieves PMS and hormonal issues, purifies the blood and clears skin, and supports the liver. Helps relieve Bronchitis, Whooping Cough, and Asthma, Red clover is a good source of estrogen isoflavones and may help to prevent cancer.
Note: Do not use Red Clover internally during pregnancy without doctor permission.
Red Raspberry ~ Goof for stomach ailments, diarrhea, colds and mouth sores, mild sore throat. A strengthening tea for women with painful and/or heavy menstruation.
Note: Even though it is used at a tonic during pregnancy, pregnant women should not use Red Raspberry without doctor permission, as it is also a mild uterine stimulant.
Rosehips ~ Calming, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, prevents viral attacks, calming. Packed full of Vitamin C. It is particularly well at reliving back ache when consumed as a tea 3 x per day. It works much like Aspirin, but without the side effects.
Rosemary ~ Upset stomach, gas, arthritic conditions. An antiviral. Stimulates appetite. Enhances blood flow and memory.
Note: Amounts used in cooking should be fine when you are pregnant, but pregnant women should not use therapeutic dosages.
Saint John's Wort ~ Drives away anxiety and depression. Antiviral.
Note: Can make one sensitive to alcoholic beverages, Melatonin supplements, and sunlight (with increased risk for sunburn and rash).
Saw Palmetto ~ Another great herb for men. Helps to reduce prostate enlargement when it is non-cancerous. See Pau D' Arco if cancer is present. Rarely, causes stomach upset.
Schisandra ~ Can help to combat Hepatitis and is a liver tonic. Normalizes blood pressure, strengthens the body and improves brain function.
Note: Siberian Ginseng can increase the effects and side effects of some antibiotics. Be cautious about using Siberian Ginseng if you have high blood pressure.
Skullcap ~ A nerve tonic and sedative.
Tarragon ~ Just 1 teaspoon each day whisks plaque from arteries within 3 weeks and raises HDL by 30% and lowers LDL by 40%.
Uva Ursi ~ A natural diuretic and bladder tonic.
Valerian ~ Helps you to relax and sleep, relieves muscle spasms.
Note: May cause headaches and excitability with continued use in some individuals.
White Willow Bark ~ Relieves pain, much as Aspirin does.
Note: Do not take if allergic to Aspirin or salicylates.
Most of the individual medicinal teas above may be created by using just one teaspoon of dried herbs to 6-8 ounces of rolling (near boiling) water. However, unless you have experience, do not blend your herbs yourself without consulting an herbalist. Certain herbs need to be prepared differently than others. For example, roots require longer steeping times (and often need to be cooked down before using) than leaves or flowers.
