Your thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland that sits at the base of your throat and works with your hypothalamus and pituitary glands to help regulate your body's hormones. It produces the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) and is in charge of performing checks and balances on how well you talk, metabolize foods, use energy, sleep, and so on.
Over-stressed adrenal glands, exposure to environmental toxins, food sensitivities, prescription medications, poor nutrition, and inadequate iodine levels all affect the performance of your thyroid.
Symptoms of thyroid disorder are numerous, but common complaints are brain fog, depression, panic attacks, unable to lose or gain weight, dry hair, eyes, skin and mouth, muscle aches and pains, problems getting to sleep or staying asleep, feeling too cold or too hot (night sweats) and hair loss.
Menopausal women often have no idea that it is their thyroid that is causing their symptoms and not the change of life, which explains why some women sail through menopause without losing sleep or their hair while others do not.
It's always a good idea to have your thyroid tested (a simple blood test) before using natural remedies to remedy thyroid issues, but testing for thyroid issues can be tricky business. Standard tests may reveal your thyroid hormones are all within reasonable limits, but this doesn't mean they are within reasonable limits for you. Meaning, a low or high TSH score, even within the normal range, may indicate thyroid issues, such as Hyperthyroidism and Hypthyroidism.
While Iodine rich foods can be beneficial in restoring the thyroid it is important you know too much iodine can work against the thyroid and create more problems than good.
