Over stimulation of the senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch) causes over-arousal. A highly sensitive nervous system causes emotions to be expressed and experienced in a more physical way.
Highly Sensitive People suffering from ongoing stress are more apt to experience stressful symptoms and syndromes, such as headache, fatigue, chronic pain, irritable bowel, insomnia, and anxiety disorder, due to a more sensitive nervous system. This can make the HSP wish to withdraw from normal daily activities and adapt a lifestyle that is less stressful, more hidden, quiet, and controlled. However, this can lead to under-arousal (not enough stimulation or activity to the senses), which can backfire into episodes of panic, isolation, attracting negative people or beliefs, or neglecting one's body or living spaces. Under-arousal may exist due to boredom, unfulfilled passions, idleness, isolation, feeling a lack of direction or purpose, depression, or fear.
Both, over-arousal and under-arousal are energy draining. They lead to negative emotions and ongoing negative emotions usually precede dis-ease, meaning a state of discomfort, which is really a disturbance in energy levels. Therefore, it is extremely important, especially living in today's world (as compared to 100 years ago) for you, the HSP, to seek balance in life. There are several ways to do this without necessarily seeking therapy, taking medications, spending a fortune, or becoming someone you are not.
You don’t have to be reduced to merely surviving each day just because you are Highly Sensitive. Feeling tired, hurt, anxious or overwhelmed on a daily basis isn't really living, but, rather, simply existing. It is a sign you have lost energy.
Additionally, being a Highly Sensitive Person means you are creative and positively gifted, which means you have what it takes at your disposal to live life on your terms and to fulfill your dreams whatever they may be.
